THE HOLY SYNOD

The Highest Ecclesiastical Authority of Our Church

Who We Are

The Holy Synod is the supreme governing body of our Church, entrusted with preserving the Apostolic Faith, safeguarding canonical order, and guiding the life of the Church in unity and truth. It is composed of the bishops of our jurisdiction, gathered in the same spirit that animated the Apostles and the Fathers of the Ecumenical Councils.

Our Synod stands in continuity with the True Orthodox Church of the Diaspora, the legacy of Metropolitan Alexy, and the faithful witness of hierarchs who preserved Orthodoxy amid persecution, dispersion, and political upheaval. This conciliar body expresses the unity of our episcopate and the shared responsibility of shepherding Christ’s flock.

Theological Foundations of the Holy Synod

1. Rooted in the Apostolic Church

The Holy Synod continues the pattern established in the Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15), where the Apostles gathered to discern the will of God together. This event became the model for all Orthodox governance: the Church is guided not by one man alone, but by the communion of bishops.

2. The Living Expression of Conciliarity

Orthodoxy is a conciliar Church. The Holy Synod embodies synodality (συνοδικότης)—the shared responsibility of bishops united in the Holy Spirit. This reflects the very life of the Holy Trinity: unity without confusion, distinction without division.

3. Guardian of the Apostolic Faith

The Holy Synod safeguards:

  • the purity of doctrine,

  • the integrity of the Holy Mysteries,

  • the discipline of the Church,

  • and the unity of the faithful.

It ensures that the faith handed down by the Apostles remains unchanged and uncorrupted in every generation.

4. Highest Authority Between Councils

When no larger council is in session, the Holy Synod is the final authority in all matters of:

  • doctrine

  • canonical order

  • episcopal elections

  • pastoral guidance

  • monastic life

  • inter‑Orthodox and inter‑Christian relations

This structure preserves both continuity and stability in the life of the Church.

Historical Continuity.

1. From the Early Church to Today

From the first centuries, bishops gathered in local and regional synods to address doctrinal and pastoral challenges. These gatherings culminated in the Ecumenical Councils, which defined the Orthodox Faith.

2. The Endemousa Synod of Constantinople

The permanent synod of bishops surrounding the Ecumenical Patriarch became the model for later Orthodox Churches. This tradition of a standing synod continues in our Church today.

3. The True Orthodox Witness

Our Holy Synod stands in the lineage of hierarchs who preserved the Orthodox Faith during:

  • the Soviet persecutions,

  • the diaspora’s fragmentation,

  • and the political pressures that distorted ecclesiastical life.

This continuity is not merely historical—it is spiritual, rooted in fidelity to the Gospel and the canons.

The Mission of the Holy Synod Today

1. To Preserve the Faith

The Synod ensures that the teaching of the Church remains faithful to the Apostolic Tradition and the patristic consensus.

2. To Shepherd the Flock

The Synod provides pastoral guidance to clergy and faithful, addressing contemporary challenges with the wisdom of the Church.

3. To Maintain Unity

The Synod safeguards the unity of our dioceses, parishes, and monastic communities, ensuring that all walk together in the same confession of faith.

4. To Witness to the Truth

In a world marked by confusion, the Synod bears witness to the unchanging truth of Orthodoxy with clarity, humility, and courage.

Why the Holy Synod Matters

The Holy Synod is not merely an administrative body. It is the heart of the Church’s conciliar life, the place where bishops gather in the Holy Spirit to discern the will of God for His people.

Through the Holy Synod, the Church remains:

  • Apostolic in faith

  • Catholic in unity

  • Orthodox in doctrine

  • Conciliar in governance

It is the living continuation of the Apostolic ministry in our time.
